Fresno County has implemented a new noise ordinance that changes how Sheriff's deputies handle noise complaints. The revision, which took effect on January 17, 2025, modifies the enforcement process under Title 8, Chapter 8.40. Previously, individuals filing complaints had to have their names included on citations issued to offenders. This requirement often discouraged people from reporting due to potential conflicts with neighbors.

The updated guidelines allow deputies to issue citations without needing the complainant's name. Deputies are encouraged to give verbal warnings before issuing citations. Complaints can be reported by calling the Sheriff's Office at (559) 600-3111.

Citations for noise violations start at $250 for a first offense and increase to $500 for a second offense within six months and $1,000 for a third offense within six months. Serious violations may result in misdemeanor charges with penalties of up to six months in jail and fines not exceeding $1,000. Visitors at noisy gatherings can also receive citations.

The ordinance aims to address frequent noise complaints related to music, machinery, vehicles, and unauthorized event venues on private land. Deputies will be trained to use decibel meter reading devices to assess if noise levels exceed state standards for residential areas.
