Suspect charged with murder in shooting incident in Raisin City

Detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office have detained Martin Avalos, aged 47, on charges of murder linked to a recent incident in Raisin City. Avalos, a resident of Raisin City, has been booked into the Fresno County Jail following his arrest.

The victim, 38-year-old Jose Rodriguez Calderon, resided adjacent to Avalos on S. Ormus Ave. The incident was reported on Friday at 8:45 pm when dispatchers from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office received a call about gunfire on Ormus Ave., south of Bowles Ave. Deputies responding to the scene found Jose Rodriguez Calderon deceased in the street with a gunshot wound.

Homicide detectives along with the Crime Scene Unit gathered evidence and interviewed nearby residents to ascertain the events leading to the shooting. After a day of investigation, officials identified Martin Avalos as the suspect. Members of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (ViCAT) apprehended Avalos Saturday evening. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.
