The Fresno County Sheriff's Jeep Rescue Unit is organizing a fundraiser on Saturday, October 5th, at Landmark Square, located at 735 Third Street in Clovis. The event will commence at 5:00 pm and feature a dinner and dance. Tickets can be purchased through the following link: https://swipesimple.com/links/lnk_a164782e.
Commonly known as "The Jeepers," the unit supports the Sheriff's Office by responding to search and rescue operations, fires, floods, and other disasters. It comprises qualified, trained volunteers who are always ready to respond to any situation upon request from the Sheriff's Office.
In 1965, the Sheriff's Office aimed to reduce response times for searches within Sierra National Forest's backcountry by utilizing four-wheel-drive trails. Assistance was sought from the Four-Wheel Drive Club of Fresno. Six members initially volunteered their vehicles, time, and expertise in navigating local trails.
This group of volunteers established the Fresno County Sheriff's Jeep Rescue Unit with approval from the Sheriff. Over the years, it has evolved into one of California's premier off-highway vehicle teams. All members are certified in first aid; some have advanced training as first responders, EMTs, or paramedics. They are registered as Disaster Service Workers with the California Emergency Management Agency and respond to mutual aid requests from other counties when needed by the Sheriff's Office.
Team members are proficient in map and compass navigation, GPS navigation, man-tracking, and first aid. They serve as sworn volunteers dedicated to public service through their membership in the unit.
