Arco, a Belgian Malinois, passed away peacefully earlier this week at home where he was living out his retirement. He was 10 and a half years old.
Arco was born on October 14, 2013, in the Netherlands. He arrived in the United States at three years old and was selected by his handler, Deputy Andrew Bright, to become part of the Fresno Sheriff’s K-9 Unit. Arco worked an assignment in patrol from 2016 to 2022 before retiring.
During his time in the unit, Arco attended many school events throughout Fresno County and was loved by all the students and staff he met. "He was a very friendly dog who loved to work and be around his friends," stated Deputy Bright. Arco successfully assisted deputies as well as specialty teams and other agencies. "Arco did a phenomenal job at protecting his handler and his law enforcement family for years as he helped to locate many violent criminals, only needing some pets and praise in return," Bright added. One of Arco’s favorite places to go while working was Shaver Lake during winter; he enjoyed the snow which brought out his playful side.
Upon retirement, Arco continued to live with his handler and family. Although he missed his job initially, he adjusted quickly to retirement and enjoyed playing in the backyard. "He was a great dog and a loving protector of his family," said Deputy Bright. "Arco will be sorely missed."
"Thank you for your service to our community Arco," concluded the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
