WASHINGTON - Congressman Jim Costa (CA-21) announced that he has been appointed to serve on a bipartisan Agricultural Labor Working Group, focusing on addressing the workforce issues faced by agricultural producers nationwide. “Our immigration system is broken and in critical need of reform. It’s long overdue that Congress enacts bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform to fix the workforce challenges our country has faced for decades,” said Costa. “As a member of this bipartisan immigration task force, I look forward to working together to confront workforce shortages and labor issues affecting the agricultural industry. Our immigrant communities deserve no less. ”Since being elected to Congress in 2005, Costa has been a champion for comprehensive immigration reform, especially for dreamers, essential workers, and farmworkers. The bipartisan Ag Labor Working Group formed by the House Agriculture Committee will focus on the following:

  • Seeking input from stakeholders, employers, and workers, particularly emphasizing the H-2A visa program for nonimmigrant agricultural workers.
  • Producing an interim report detailing the program's shortcomings and the impacts on food security.
  • Filing a final report with recommendations to address the flaws within the program.
The final report of the working group will provide a comprehensive suite of potential solutions that can inform and be utilized in subsequent legislative efforts.

Members of the Ag Labor Working Group include: Co-Chair Don Davis (NC-01), Co-Chair Rick Crawford (AR-01), Yadira Caraveo (CO-08), Lori Chavez-Deremer (OR-05), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Monica de la Cruz (TX-15), Jim Costa (CA-21), Nick Langworthy (NY-23), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), Darren Soto (FL-09), David Rouzer (NC-07), Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) and Derrick Van Orden (WI-03).
