On Tuesday, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office and the County of Fresno announced the opening of the new West Annex Jail. The facility is situated on Merced Street, adjacent to the existing North Annex Jail and Main Jail in downtown Fresno.
The West Annex Jail includes 300 beds, classrooms, exercise yards, medical clinics, enhanced officer safety features, laundry facilities, video visitation stations, and observation and safety cells. Construction of the facility began in 2018 with a total project cost of $100 million. A state grant provided $80 million towards this expense.
The new jail replaces the South Annex Jail, which was built in 1941. The South Annex will officially close later this month but will remain standing for now. Effective December 14, 2024, the South Annex Jail has permanently closed and been replaced by the West Annex Jail at 2208 Merced Street in downtown Fresno. A schedule for visiting incarcerated persons at the West Annex Jail is available online.
A video showing the ribbon-cutting ceremony is available for viewing.
