United San Joaquin announced on Apr. 20 the upcoming launch of a new broad-based People’s Organization aimed at supporting immigrant families across the Central Valley. The organization is set to bring together parishes and other institutions to address challenges faced by immigrants, including family separation and limited access to legal representation.
The initiative comes as many immigrant families in the region continue to experience uncertainty and fear due to detentions and separations, affecting members of local parishes, schools, and neighborhoods. United San Joaquin said its efforts are rooted in Catholic values that emphasize upholding human dignity and defending family unity.
Bishop Joseph Brennan has shown support for these communities by celebrating Mass at a local detention center, demonstrating solidarity with those who are vulnerable or at risk of being forgotten. According to United San Joaquin, “the Church accompanies all people, especially those who are vulnerable and at risk of being forgotten.”
The organization’s launch event is scheduled for May 3. Tim McManus, Lead Organizer with United San Joaquin, invited interested individuals or parishes seeking involvement or more information to contact him directly.
United San Joaquin said it aims to respond pastorally while also acting collectively in a nonpartisan manner “to strengthen our communities and ensure that dignity and justice are upheld.”
