Rep. Jim Costa, who has represented California’s 21st District in the U.S. Congress since 2005, recently addressed several policy concerns on social media regarding federal funding and government priorities. Costa, a Fresno native with a long tenure in public service at both state and federal levels, used his official account to comment on issues affecting his district and national interests.

On July 10, 2025, Costa raised concerns about recent reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), stating that “SNAP cuts mean Fresno County will be forced to cover an extra $6.5 million as the federal share drops from 50% to just 25%. At a time when food and rent are already too high, this policy only adds to the burden on working families.”

Later that same day, Costa criticized legislative developments he referred to as “The One Big, Ugly Bill,” asserting that “The One Big, Ugly Bill puts billionaires first and Valley families last. I’ll keep fighting to protect our communities.”

On July 11, 2025, Costa commented on proposed job cuts within the State Department: “Diplomatic expertise matters. Cutting 1,300+ State Dept. jobs, including hundreds of seasoned diplomats, could undercut U.S. leadership in an increasingly complex global landscape.”

Jim Costa was born in Fresno in 1952 and currently resides there. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Fresno in 1974 before beginning his political career in the California State Assembly in 1978.
