Rep. Jim Costa, who has represented California’s 21st district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, recently addressed several key issues affecting his constituency and the nation through a series of social media posts. The tweets focused on proposed federal legislation impacting housing aid, the passing of a prominent local official, and recent healthcare policy changes.
On July 14, 2025, Costa criticized a new legislative proposal, stating that “The ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ guts $32.9B from HUD – slashing housing aid nationwide – while giving massive tax breaks to the wealthy. For the Valley, that means: 15,000 residents are at risk of losing housing. $72M in potential rental income lost, impacting 1,300”. The statement highlights concerns about the bill’s impact on affordable housing in his district and across the country.
Later that day, Costa shared condolences regarding the death of Henry L. Thompson, Director of Aviation for the City of Fresno. In his post dated July 14, 2025, he wrote: “I am deeply saddened to learn the passing of Henry L. Thompson, Director of Aviation for the City of Fresno. As a dedicated public servant, Henry’s leadership was instrumental in strengthening our region’s infrastructure. I had the privilege of working alongside him to expand”. Costa recognized Thompson’s contributions to regional infrastructure and reflected on their professional collaboration.
In another post on July 14, 2025, Costa responded to healthcare legislation signed by President Trump: “President Trump signed a bill into law that threatens hospital closures and slashes healthcare for individuals – across the country and right here in the Valley. That’s why I voted NO.” He expressed opposition to this measure due to its anticipated effects on healthcare access both nationally and within his district.
Jim Costa has served in Congress since replacing Cal Dooley in 2005 and previously held positions in both chambers of California’s state legislature from 1978 through 2002. Born in Fresno in 1952 and currently residing there, Costa graduated from California State University, Fresno with a BA in 1974.
