Rep. Jim Costa, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 21st district since 2005, posted a series of statements on July 17, 2025, addressing mental health crisis response, cryptocurrency regulation for government officials, and funding delays for victim support services.
In an early morning post on July 17, Costa highlighted the impact of the national mental health crisis hotline: “Since its launch, 988 has answered over 10 million calls, texts, and chats. It’s saved lives, de-escalated crises, and offered hope. But more support is needed through more staffing, local centers, and broader outreach to ensure no call goes unanswered.”
Later that day at 14:06 UTC, Costa addressed concerns about government officials profiting from digital assets: “No one in government should profit from cryptocurrency for personal gain. I cosponsored @RepLiccardo’s MEME Act to ban federal elected officials, including the President and his family, from profiting off crypto and other digital assets.”
At 16:48 UTC on the same day, Costa called attention to delays in federal funding allocations for victim services: “ICYMI: Delays in VOCA funding are putting life-saving services for survivors at risk. That’s why I led 33 colleagues in demanding that the Trump Administration release funding allocations so victims aren’t left without the support they urgently need.”
Costa has represented California’s Central Valley in Congress since succeeding Cal Dooley in 2005. Before his tenure in Congress he served in both chambers of California’s state legislature from 1978 to 2002. Born and residing in Fresno since his birth in 1952, Costa graduated with a BA from California State University, Fresno in 1974.
