Jim Costa, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 21st district since 2005, has taken to social media to express his concerns about several policy issues affecting his constituents. Costa, who succeeded Cal Dooley in this role and previously served in both the California State Assembly and Senate, has voiced his opposition to policies introduced by former President Donald Trump.
On June 8, 2025, Costa highlighted the impact of Trump’s tariffs on families in the Valley, stating “Valley families are feeling the squeeze—Trump’s tariffs are raising prices on food, energy, and essentials.” He emphasized his efforts to push for a vote to repeal these tariffs to alleviate financial pressures at checkout lines.
Later that day, Costa shared insights from his appearance on Sunday Morning Matters. In his post, he criticized what he referred to as Trump’s “big-ugly bill,” explaining that it “slashes Medicaid, explodes the deficit, and fails to tackle the real drivers of spending.” He pointed out that while billionaires benefit from tax breaks under this legislation, Valley families bear the financial burden.
On June 9, 2025, Costa addressed another issue regarding cultural preservation. He expressed concern over President Trump’s opposition to the establishment of a Latino Smithsonian Museum. In a tweet referencing the Hispanic Caucus’s longstanding efforts toward this initiative, Costa asserted that they “won’t let that happen” in response to any attempts by Trump to block its creation and erase Latino history.
As a Fresno native with a background in political science from California State University, Fresno, Jim Costa remains actively engaged in legislative matters impacting his district and beyond.
