Rep. Jim Costa, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 21st district, recently shared his thoughts on various national issues through a series of tweets. Serving since 2005 after replacing Cal Dooley, Costa has been an active voice in legislative matters and public discourse.
On May 9, 2025, Rep. Costa criticized the Republican majority for their legislative priorities. He stated, “Republicans have the majority. Instead of improving the lives of hardworking Americans, they’ve prioritized renaming the Gulf of Mexico.”
In another tweet from the same day, Costa expressed appreciation for military personnel during Military Appreciation Month. He tweeted, “Our military members – past and present – embody the true meaning of courage, sacrifice, and dedication to our nation. This #MilitaryAppreciationMonth, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who have served and continue to serve.”
Later that day, Costa addressed President Trump’s decision to dismiss Dr. Carla Hayden from her position at the Library of Congress. He remarked that “President Trump’s firing of Dr. Carla Hayden is a disgraceful partisan attack on a respected public servant.” Costa emphasized that this action undermines the independence of one of America’s esteemed institutions.
Costa’s background includes service in both California’s State Assembly and Senate before his tenure in Congress began in 2005. Born in Fresno in 1952 and educated at California State University, Fresno with a BA earned in 1974, he continues to reside in his hometown.
