Rep. Jim Costa, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 21st district, expressed concerns over a legislative proposal referred to as “The Big Ugly Bill” through a series of tweets on July 2, 2025. Costa, who has been in Congress since replacing Cal Dooley in 2005 and has a long history of public service within California, addressed the potential negative impacts of this bill on various communities and sectors.
On July 2, 2025, Rep. Jim Costa posted his first tweet regarding the bill stating “Let’s call it what it is: The Big Ugly Bill hurts Latino communities.” He voiced his solidarity with colleagues to oppose these proposed cuts.
In another post later that day at 22:00 UTC, Costa highlighted economic concerns by noting that “Every $1 in SNAP generates $1.50 in economic activity.” He warned that reductions would adversely affect grocery sales and farm economies by reducing demand and impacting workers’ hours.
Finally, at 23:00 UTC on the same day, Costa addressed proposed Medicaid cuts in the bill. He cautioned that such measures could have extensive repercussions beyond those directly enrolled in Medicaid programs. According to him “Hospitals rely on Medicaid funding,” which means any cutbacks might lead to longer ER wait times and diminished services even within local areas like the Valley.
As a representative born in Fresno and an alumnus of California State University, Fresno with extensive experience both federally and locally from previous roles in the California State Assembly and Senate, Costa continues to be vocal about issues affecting his constituents.
