Rep. Jim Costa, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 21st district, recently addressed several pressing issues through his social media platform. Costa has been serving in Congress since 2005 after succeeding Cal Dooley and has a long history of public service in California’s legislative bodies.
On June 9, 2025, Costa expressed concern about the impact of cuts to nutrition assistance programs on children’s education and health. He stated, “Hungry kids can’t focus in the classroom or grow up healthy.” He emphasized that reductions in SNAP and school meal programs adversely affect families when they are most vulnerable.
Later that day, Costa criticized a legislative proposal by House Republicans. He argued that their bill purportedly designed to aid hardworking Americans primarily benefits billionaires rather than the middle class. In his words, “Our Valley families deserve real tax relief, not handouts for the ultra-rich.”
In another post on June 9th, Costa commented on an unprecedented move by a U.S. President to deploy the national guard into a state without a governor’s request since the 1960s. He described this action as politically motivated rather than true leadership and underscored the importance of maintaining “the fundamental right to peaceful freedom of speech.”
Costa was born in Fresno, California in 1952 and continues to reside there today at age 71. His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fresno.
