Jim Costa, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 21st district since 2005, recently shared his views on several pressing issues through a series of tweets. Costa, who succeeded Cal Dooley in Congress and has previously served in both the California State Assembly and Senate, addressed topics ranging from healthcare to agricultural tariffs.
On May 17, 2025, Jim Costa criticized Republican members of the House Energy & Commerce Committee for their decision regarding Medicaid. He stated, “Republicans on the House Energy & Commerce Committee voted to gut Medicaid. I’ve signed a discharge petition to force a vote and stop it.” Costa further questioned whether his GOP colleagues would protect Americans’ health care or prioritize tax breaks for billionaires.
The following day, May 18, 2025, Costa expressed concern over the impact of tariffs introduced during Trump’s administration on agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley. He tweeted that “Trump’s reckless tariffs are making it more expensive to grow, ship, and buy food.” Emphasizing the financial strain on local families, he noted that even major retailers like Walmart were affected by these price hikes.
On May 19, 2025, Costa announced his support for legislation aimed at assisting farmworkers affected by disasters. He declared his role as a cosponsor of Representative Andrea Salinas’ Disaster for Farmworkers Relief Act by stating: “Proud to cosponsor @RepAndreaSalinas’ Disaster for Farmworkers Relief Act—because farmworkers shouldn’t be left behind when disaster strikes.” This bill seeks to provide compensation to farmworkers whose hours or wages are impacted by extreme weather or public health emergencies.
As an advocate for California’s agricultural community and with deep roots in Fresno where he was born in 1952 and continues to reside today, Jim Costa’s legislative efforts reflect his commitment to addressing both local and national concerns related to health care and economic stability.
