U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Aman Kumar, an Indian national, outside the Fresno courthouse after he was released from jail by local authorities following a felony hit-and-run incident that injured a 4-year-old boy.

A DHS press release said ICE officers arrested Kumar outside the California Superior Court in Fresno on May 13 after sanctuary politicians released him from jail. The illegal alien from India had been charged with felony hit and run following the April 28 incident, where he struck a 4-year-old boy who wandered into the road near Peach and Nevada avenues in East Central Fresno. Local authorities initially took Kumar into custody the next day before his release under sanctuary policies. The boy was hospitalized in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.

Officers say the 4-year-old boy had been playing in his backyard when he walked into the road and was struck by Kumar’s vehicle, as reported by YourCentralValley.com. Kumar briefly stopped after the impact, then fled the scene in east central Fresno. Police located and arrested him on April 29. He has since been bailed out of Fresno County Jail prior to the ICE action.

According to ICE, California jurisdictions did not comply with 4,561 detainers involving noncitizens with criminal convictions since Jan. 20. There are currently 33,179 noncitizens in the custody of California jurisdictions subject to active detainers.

ICE was created in 2003 as part of the DHS. The agency has more than 20,000 law enforcement and support personnel across over 400 offices worldwide with an annual budget of approximately $8 billion, according to its website.
