The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about a scam targeting families of people held in the Fresno County Jail. According to the department, several reports have been received from individuals who say they were contacted by someone claiming to be an employee or even a lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office.
The caller tells recipients that they can secure the release of their incarcerated loved one if bail money is paid directly to them. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized, “The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office wants to make it clear to the public that it never makes solicitations for money or asks for the payment of fines, bonds, etc. over the phone.”
Authorities caution residents that scammers may use caller ID spoofing so that calls appear to come from official law enforcement numbers. They warn, “Be cautious when answering phone calls. The number displayed on your caller ID may say Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, but it may not be one of our official phone lines. Scammers sometimes spoof the ID in order to entice the citizen to take the phone call.” They further advise that any threats or requests for payment are not legitimate.
The department notes these scams often target vulnerable populations and encourages community members to discuss this issue with friends and family as a preventive measure. If anyone receives such a call, officials urge them not to comply with demands or share personal information.
Victims are asked to document details like names and phone numbers associated with suspicious calls and report incidents to their local law enforcement agency. Residents in Fresno County can file online reports through the Sheriff’s website by selecting “Harassing Phone Call” under “Report a Crime” at www.fresnosheriff.org.
Additionally, complaints can be submitted to the Federal Trade Commission via https://consumer.ftc.gov/scams.
