The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has issued a reminder to the community regarding the requirement for all individuals operating motorized vessels to possess a California Boater Card. This regulation applies to persons of all ages.
Failure to present a valid card when stopped by law enforcement on waterways could result in an infraction citation. Conviction for such an infraction may lead to fines up to $100, with repeated violations potentially resulting in fines reaching $500.
The implementation of this requirement began in 2018, initially targeting specific age groups, with additional groups being phased in over subsequent years. As of January 1, 2025, the mandate extends to all age categories. The initiative aims to ensure that vessel operators are knowledgeable about boating laws and safety practices. The state’s objective is to reduce injuries and fatalities on waterways through proper education.
Exceptions exist for those under supervision; individuals without a Boater ID Card can operate a vessel if accompanied by an adult possessing one. Renters of vessels are exempt from needing a card but are encouraged to obtain one nonetheless.
To acquire a lifetime Boater ID Card, applicants must complete an approved course and pay a one-time fee of $10. Applications can be submitted at: https://californiaboatercard.com
